NorCal Vendor Spotlight: Ruby’s Beauty Studio
Bridal Hair and Makeup
How long have you been doing bridal makeup?
13 years. I did a beauty course here in the Bay and as soon as I finished I started my business. I did it from my home for about 9 months. Fortunately my clientele grew quickly and I moved into a studio in Milpitas.
From day one, I have been an artist as well as a business owner.
How many brides do you do per year?
If the distances between events isn’t too big, I can do multiple brides in 1 day. Usually I do all of the events: sangeet/garba, wedding and reception.
Can you describe the scope of your services?
Hair, makeup, sari draping, setting the dupatta for the bride, jewelry application.
I provide services for family and guests as well. I have a team who takes care of family and friends while I focus on the bride.
Describe a typical amount of time to get the bride ready for the wedding.
2-3 hours to do hair, makeup, dressing, and jewelry. It’s her big day so I don’t like to rush. And I don’t leave until she’s satisfied. I bring everything. If someone says they want to use their own foundation that’s fine but they’re not obligated to bring it. If they have special accessories for their hair, they bring that.
How do you come up with looks for brides?
I ask about the colors of their clothes, their themes, what the events are and their vision. Some brides have a sense of what they want. It’s a combo of the photos they bring and what I suggest. That’s what a trial is for – we try different things and come up with suitable looks that she likes.
What celebrity makeup have you done?
Amrita Rao, Neha Dhupia, Ayushmann Khurrana’s wife, Shreya Goshal to name a few. Whenever they come here for shows or events, their promoters contact me. It’s fun and rewarding to work with them.
What sets your service apart?
good brand products
My brides tend to be people who don’t wear a lot of makeup on a regular basis and want a natural look – they typically don’t like ‘cakey’ makeup. And I like to give them different looks for each event. I’m trained in air brush but often I can give them a refined look without air brush; and my makeup doesn’t budge – it stays all day. As for products, I could easily use $5 hairspray, but I don’t. I use more costly hair spray because it doesn’t make the bride’s hair dry or stiff and it smells great!
Share about the classes that you teach.
I love to teach, educate people, and give back. Currently I teach at beauty schools from Napa down to Modesto. I do live demos on models and teach basic to very advanced techniques. I enjoy teaching and it’s also a great way to expand my network.
I also teach private lessons to consumers – regular people who want to learn how to do their own makeup. All women have beautiful natural features. I teach them how to enhance them. It’ amazing how just using a little makeup and good technique can enhance those features so they can still look natural.
Depending on each person’s needs I show them techniques they can accomplish in 10 mins or 3-40 minutes. My clients vary – from beginners to advanced. My goal is to reach larger audiences one day doing live seminars.
It’s really rewarding to receive their texts and messages with photos of their beautiful makeup that they’ve done themselves. It’s fun too! This summer I’m doing a private lesson for a group of ladies in San Francisco.
