How did you decide on your venues?

For the wedding and reception we wanted a hotel. We looked at popular venues in LA and Orange County. When I walked into the Hyatt Regency Long Beach, I said to myself, “this is it”. I immediately loved it. Plus when I spoke with the catering manager there I could tell she was very knowledgeable about desi weddings. It just felt right.

We had a lot of people coming in from out-of-town so we wanted them to have a California experience. The proximity to the airport was helpful. And we loved their cute gondola. Amar arrived for the baraat via the gondola which made it really fun and unique.

Sangeet Venue: I knew I wanted the Diamond Bar Community Center. I love the views!

People love this stage feature in their Grand Hall. It’s great for performances at a sangeet or even a wedding ceremony.

I like how pliable their Grand Hall is, you can make it whatever you want in terms of lighting, decor, setup. Plus I love the stage which is great for performances at a sangeet or even a wedding ceremony. The staff was pretty easy to work with.

Some points about using that space:
It’s all about selecting really good vendors who have either worked at that venue before or have worked at similar venues. It’s not like a hotel where a lot of things are taken care of.

They book so quickly – have to book at least a year in advance, if not more. Some people do their sangeet on Thursday night because it’s easier to get the venue.

Photo opportunities are abundant at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach – on the property itself and surrounding downtown Long Beach.

Why did you do an indoor ceremony?
It was January and I didn’t want to leave anything up to mother nature. They did a fire watch for us so that we could have the Hindu ceremony indoors and it worked out great!

They used their larger Ballroom - the Regency Ballroom - for the wedding and reception.

The hotel needs at least 2.5 hours to 'flip' the room from a ceremony setup to reception setup.

We had a time gap in-between the ceremony and the reception in which we served lunch in the ballroom across from the wedding. Most guests were staying at the hotel.

Do you have any wedding planning advice?

  • Go with your gut
  • Prioritize and focus. I knew what was most important to us and we focused our efforts on those things.

How did Amar propose?
He took me on a helicopter ride in Santa Monica

They really listened to me and he was open to new ideas vs. videographers and photographers who have a cookie-cutter style for desi weddings and I didn’t want that.
