Why Do Hindu Brides Push a Bowl of Rice?

In Hinduism it is said that daughters are the lakshmi (bearers of prosperity) of the home. It is also believed that the Goddess Lakshmi stays at the front of the home.

Rice is a symbol of prosperity. That is why, at the vidai you see bride throw rice behind her, symbolizing her hope that despite the fact that she’s leaving, that lakshmi will stay in her childhood home.

And when she enters her home as a newlywed bride, it is believed that she will bring lakshmi with her.
