Varmala at Indian Weddings

Varmala aka jaimala is a tradition at the beginning of the Hindu and Jain wedding ceremony. Mala means string of beads or garlnd. Malas are very commonly used in Indian religious practices.

The bride places a garland, comprised of flowers, around the groom’s neck and vice versa.  It represents the acceptance of the impending marriage ceremony.
